Polling Booth Complaints: Accessibility, EVM & Facility Issues
The Election Commission of India mandates strict Assured Minimum Facilities (AMF) at every polling booth. If your booth lacked basic amenities or encountered EVM delays, here is how you can seek redressal.
ECI Assured Minimum Facilities (AMF) Checklist
Every polling station in India is legally required to provide the following facilities for voters:
1. Disability Access & Ramps
Permanent or sturdy temporary ramps with standard gradient for wheelchairs, plus volunteer assistance for PwD and senior citizens.
2. Potable Drinking Water
Clean and hygienic drinking water arrangements accessible throughout the polling hours.
3. Waiting Sheds & Queuing Shade
Adequate shade or shamiana covering waiting lines to protect voters from harsh sun or rain.
4. Lighting & Gender Toilets
Proper electrical lighting inside voting compartments and functional separate toilets for male and female voters.
What to Do if an EVM or VVPAT Fails
If an electronic voting machine stops responding or does not display the VVPAT paper slip for 7 seconds:
- Immediately alert the Presiding Officer before leaving the polling compartment.
- The machine must be replaced by a reserve EVM/VVPAT unit under the supervision of the Sector Officer.
- Votes already recorded prior to malfunction remain safe in the Control Unit memory and are never lost.
